Abstract
This study verified the mediating effect of disinhibition and the moderating effect of emotion regulation strategies in the relationship of the behavioral activation system(BAS) and the behavioral inhibition system(BIS) with binge eating. A survey was conducted with 306 women over 20 years, measuring levels of binge eating, BAS and BIS activity, and emotion regulation strategies. A hierarchical regression analysis and analysis using the SPSS PROCESS macro (model 7) verified the moderating effect and moderated mediation effect. The main results of the study are as follows. First, the correlation analysis showed significant correlations among binge eating, BAS activity, BIS activity, and emotion regulation strategies. Second, the mediation analysis showed that the pathway from both BAS and BIS to binge eating through the mediator of disinhibition was significant. Third, the moderation analysis showed that the moderating effect was negative for adaptive emotion regulation strategies but not significant for maladaptive emotion regulation strategies in the process through which BAS and BIS activity affect disinhibition. Among the subfactors, ¡°proactive thinking¡±, ¡°taking action to solve problems¡±, ¡°asking for advice and help¡±, ¡°expressing emotions to and seeking empathy¡±, ¡°see close others¡± showed a negative moderating effect. In addition, significant negative moderating effects were observed for ¡°cognitive acceptance¡±, ¡°emotional acceptance¡± in the case of BAS and ¡°pleasant thinking¡±, ¡°passive thinking¡± in the case of BIS. Fourth, examining adaptive emotion regulation strategies and sub-strategies verified above for BAS, BIS, and the mediation model of disinhibition and binge eating showed that moderated mediating effects were significant. Finally, the significance, limitations, and directions for future research are discussed.
